Reading this story from CNNMoney.com/Yahoo about the struggling Postal Service got me to thinking about the value of ancillary services and products.

USPS officials are talking once again about ending Saturday service. The story says U.S. law prevents the Postal Service from offering secondary services like other nations’ postal services. In Japan and Italy, the postal services offer banking.

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to stray from your core product or service. But during a severe recession and a changing business climate, having ancillary products and services can add value to your business and help you weather rough times. Airlines have drawn attention — and criticism — for charging fees for such things as having extra baggage. But there’s no doubt the airlines have found a way to make more money while continuing to compete on ticket price.
